Popular wisdom says that we have to listen to something three times before we really hear it. This summer, at three different trainings and retreats, I heard three esteemed teachers read the same text.
Okay, it’s time to sit up and pay attention. Yes, it’s possible that these teachers just had tweeted it around, but still…. Of course I’m going to pass it on to you. Ready?
Rest in natural great peace this exhausted mind, beaten helpless by karma and neurotic thoughts, like the relentless fury of the pounding waves in the infinite ocean of samsara. (Khempo Jamyang Dorje, Tibetan teacher)
The imagery can be a bit overwhelming: an infinite ocean of suffering with furious waves, an exhausted, helpless mind. Samsara: the wheel of suffering. But within surrender is the essence and possibility of rest in natural great peace. That rest is available. Perhaps presence is the life preserver in the midst of the furious waves of thoughts and karma.
Read it three times, and pass it on!
